Few settings are more symbolic than the New York Stock Exchange — the world’s top spot for raising capital — to celebrate and promote Virginia Tech’s initiatives in innovation and entrepreneurship.
And on April 26, 2016, Virginia Tech — President Tim Sands, Pamplin College of Business Dean Robert Sumichrast, and a group of alumni, including advisory board members of the Apex Systems Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship — did just that by ringing the closing bell at 4 p.m.
At the forefront of the university’s initiatives in innovation and entrepreneurship is the Apex Systems Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Pamplin College of Business. Established in 2014 to educate students about entrepreneurship and involve them in entrepreneurship activities, the center offers a variety of opportunities for students to be involved with a dynamic network, including interactions with entrepreneurs-in-residence, “treks” to entrepreneurial hot spots around the nation, and the Innovate living-learning community on campus. The center, also known as Apex CIE, also serves as a resource for outreach to the business community and supports faculty research related to entrepreneurship, technology commercialization, and new venture formation and growth.

Virginia Tech student teams will compete at the VT KnowledgeWorks Global Entrepreneurship Challenge Semifinals for the chance to win one of three scholarship prizes, including the $5,000 Plastics One Advanced Manufacturing Award for the most outstanding tangible product, the $5,000 VT KnowledgeWorks Information Technology Award for the most outstanding intangible product or service, and the $5,000 People’s Choice Award, sponsored by the Virginia Tech Pamplin College of Business. One of the two teams that receive the Advanced Manufacturing or the Information Technology award will earn the grand prize and receive an additional $10,000 in scholarship assistance, as well as the opportunity to compete on a world stage in the $25,000 VT KnowledgeWorks Global Student Entrepreneurship Challenge this August.
